What is the difference between cotton and canvas bags?

Bags are a popular promotional gift, and you’ve no doubt received a cotton bag or canvas tote at some point. But what exactly is the difference between cotton and canvas? We’re here to explain it!

At Greengiving, the majority of our bag range consists of cotton bags - and with good reason. Cotton is made from soft, single-celled fibres that grow from the outer layer of the cotton plant’s seeds. These fibres are spun into threads, which are then woven into a soft, breathable fabric. Cotton bags have the advantage of being very strong and suitable for detailed printing. They’re also machine-washable and crease far less than, for example, linen bags. In short, cotton is a highly sustainable and user-friendly natural material!
Canvas bags
It can be confusing that some bags are referred to as cotton and others as canvas, even though they appear to be the same. In fact, canvas can be described as a coarse, tightly woven cotton fabric with a firm feel. The difference lies in the yarns: canvas is woven with thicker threads than standard cotton, resulting in a sturdier textile. For instance, canvas bags often have a weight of 250 or 260 grams per square metre, whereas cotton bags tend to be at least 100 grams lighter. But precisely because of their heavier weight, canvas bags are durable and suitable for long-term use.
